BUILDING
PERMANENT
IN-COUNTRY SOLUTIONS.
WHAT WE DO
PATIENT REFERRAL AND ADVOCACY
We establish referral relationships with high-quality medical centers throughout the world to treat specific children and young adults with surgically repairable heart conditions, and mobilize the funding and logistical support to make these surgeries possible.
NATIONAL-LEVEL SYSTEMS AND STRATEGY
We work with in-country providers to consolidate their separate patient lists into a single, triaged national waiting list of children and young adults in need of cardiac surgery. This data, in turn, supports long-term national planning for permanent, sustainable cardiac care capacity.
PATIENT AND FAMILY SUPPORT
We provide hands-on social and practical accompaniment to patients and their families who are facing the prospect of heart surgery, including psycho-social counseling; logistical assistance navigating the health-care system; and support overcoming practical barriers to care such as transportation and medication access.
CASE-FINDING AND CLINICAL FOLLOW-UP
We screen and diagnose hundreds of patients per year with congenital and rheumatic heart disease, and ensure they receive regular long-term clinical follow-up both before and after their surgeries.
HAITI
We are the only organization working at a national level in Haiti to diagnose, treat, and provide follow-up to young Haitians with heart disease. We manage a comprehensive national surgical waiting list, and accompany over 50 Haitian families each year to other countries for heart surgery.
BOLIVIA
We work closely with Bolivia's only public-sector cardiac surgery program, in La Paz, to ensure that children from throughout the entire country can benefit from life-saving cardiac surgery there. We do this by performing outreach clinics to cities and towns throughout Bolivia, and by arranging transportation and other practical needs for families whose children have been accepted for surgery.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
We focus on arranging life-saving heart surgery for the Dominican Republic's large population of families of Haitian origin who have no access to cardiac care other than through our program. We also work closely with partner organizations to grow cardiac surgical capacity in Dominican Republic in ways that result in more surgeries being offered to both Dominican and Haitian children and young adults.
ZAMBIA
We partner with the National Heart Hospital in Lusaka to increase access to diagnosis and treatment for young people with heart disease throughout Zambia. We focus on strengthening national referral networks, supporting families to help them overcome practical barriers to treatment, and recruiting and coordinating other partner organizations to help the program continue to grow.
